September 2022

Rehearsals start on Tuesday 6 September at Shirley Methodist Church for our next concert on 25 November with guest conductor Keith Slade. We’ll be performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Anne Bolt, Copland – Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, Debussy – Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune and Dvorak – The Golden Spinning Wheel. Music Director Jon Malaxetxebarria will be conducting rehearsals during September and October before Keith takes over in November.

As always, we would welcome a few more string players – we’re ok for cellos, but there are vacancies in all other sections, especially violas.

Potential new members are welcome to join us for one term at no cost! Contact us by email, phone, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. All the details are on the website. We look forward to seeing you!

Summer Term 2022

Rehearsals for our Summer Concert start on Tuesday 26 April at Shirley Methodist Church with guest conductor Richard Jenkinson. The concert focuses on the links between European and black American music in the early 20th century.

The programme features works by Edward Elgar and Frederick Delius, who was born in Bradford, but spent several years in the USA. As the concert coincides with the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, we will also be playing the Prelude and Les Chassereuses from Sylvia by Leo Delibes. The concert concludes with the  African-American Folk Symphony by William Dawson, written in 1935, the same year as both Edward Elgar and Frederick Delius died.

The concert will be on Saturday 2 July at 19:30 in Shirley Methodist Church. Tickets will be available in a few weeks time.
